Let’s go to Capo di Leuca!

Let’s go to Capo di Leuca!

Great all year-round

Who said that Salento is only lovely in the summer? The truth is that autumn, too, is the perfect time here. Discover our farmhouses, with their open fires and the long autumn mornings that rush towards harvest time for grapes and olives. It’s time to get together, unwind, and reawaken the senses to the authentic scent of home-made pasta. We can safely say that Capo di Leuca has never looked so good as it does in autumn. Our long, white beach is a great place to end a day out exploring the Salento area. Sit in a bar and enjoy a Lecce-style espresso, the one with a bit of almond milk added, speak to the locals, hear their dramatic stories of fisher folk or bucolic farmers’ tales.
In the autumn in Capo di Leuca make the most of sunny days to take a boat trip along the coast to see the grottoes, or set off on foot or bicycle from Punta Ciolo to Punta Meliso. The route takes you through beautiful countryside, and in the patches of swampy terrain there is interesting wildlife including buzzards and peregrine falcons. These are now protected species, thanks to the creation of Leuca’s Parco Otranto – SM nature reserve. The limpid autumn daylight gives the scenery a somewhat ethereal look, lifting the spirits, and night-time walks are really enjoyable too, under the soft moonlight.
Then there are Leuca’s lovely shops for some fun shopping trips, where you’ll find lots of locally crafted gift items. Or pop into any one of many cake shops and bakeries to sample our local fare such as ‘pasticiotti’ and ‘pucce’ and all kinds of different breads. And don’t forget to taste our great cheeses and other dairy products, too!
Visit the wonderful Santa Maria di Leuca Basililca and admire the wonderful architecture and interior – a must-see for everyone, believer or not. Its beauty, majesty and history make the Basilica seem almost like a diamond ‘set’, as it is, right on the southernmost tip of the Italian peninsula. Sit down in the cool interior and enjoy the prayerful silence, or take a walk in the sun around the massive square outside. There’s the museum, too, full of artworks by artists from all over the world.
Then in the evening it’s time to gather to eat and drink, enjoy concerts, outdoor festivities and food festivals with all the warmth that Salento exudes, forgetting your cares and rediscovering joy in life’s simple pleasures.
So, dear readers, you see that one never gets bored here in Leuca, and any season is great for a holiday in Salento. We at the Hotel Montiró are ready to welcome you any day of the year. Efficiency and going the extra mile are all part of the proverbial Salento hospitality.
