Today we want to propose some of them, so that you can draw some ideas to arrange and spend unforgettable holidays.
Let’s start from Masseria San Giovanni, a trail in the town of Santa Cesarea Terme, where you can enjoy a definitely exciting experience.
You can get to the core of the countryside landscapes of Salento, surrounded by holm oaks, kermes oaks and the Mediterranean vegetation. You will tread dirt paths lined by dry-stone walls and you will have the possibility to observe the “pajare”, rural buildings typical of Salento that highlight the agricultural tradition and culture of the region. Which is also proved by the huge amount of olive trees, vineyards and fig trees.
Parco della Pineta is another trail characterised by a strong presence of Aleppo pines, but also pseudo-steppe, herbaceous vegetation, myrtles and mastic trees.
A specific equipped area gives you the possibility to arrange enjoyable picnics, which would be an even more authentic experience if the basket included local typical food.
On the coast between Castro and Santa Cesarea Terme you will find Grotta Carlo Cosma: a path lined by dry-stone walls that are so peculiar and well kept that they look like laces.
Moreover, in spring and summer, the path gets “decorated” by different kinds of orchids and it feels like being in a painting!
The path gets its name from its main attraction: a prehistoric cave (“grotta” in Italian) with rock paintings that cannot be visited for the moment, because it is still being studied and examined. Hemicycles, tunnels, vases, votive lamps and graves have been found in the cave.
The rock paintings are mostly done of brown clay and raddle.
After this jump into prehistory, you can return in the present and tread other two paths: Località Scute and Terre Rosse.
The latter develops on a crag of compact limestone with a very peculiar vegetation, especially the species that grow in the rock crevices.
