Capo di Leuca has a crystal clear light blue sea. Its shores are rocky and they hide breathtaking naturalistic treasures and and caves where the blue of the sea fills with luminous facets and schools of fish. It is one of the ideal destinations for snorkeling in Salento.
Snorkeling is an activity that is easy to do if you know how to swim a bit. It consists of swimming with your head just under the water with a snorkel, a mask and if needed a life vest. This way you will be able to see all the underwater splendours of this area. The sea/coastal landscape of Leuca offers a variety of allurement for those who do snorkeling or immersions.
The caves hidden among the rocks along the coast of Leuca, are a big favourite for immersions. They are deep, uncontaminated, alluring and mysterious. There are some with incredible colours. The tones go from light blue to cobalt blue plus the thousand different hues of the calcareous rocks. The Grotta del Soffio is among the most appreciated caves for this kind of activity. its name comes from the spray of water that generates from the waves when they enter the cave. It is not such a deep cave. it has two chambers in a thousand different colours and is inhabited by very nice prawns.
Under the water everything changes and it’s like living in a different dimension. Tiny invisible fish seem much bigger and more colourful and the rocks seem more overpowering. Snorkeling is always an adventure.
Another favoured destination is Punta Meliso, under the lighthouse of Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Ionian and the Adriatic Seas meet. Here you can see the sea flora and fauna in all their splendour. You can see stone-basses, moray eels, spider crabs, sea-urchins and barracudas. Expert scuba-divers can even go deeper, up to 50 metres under in order to see a truly unique and exclusive sight.
Not far from Santa Maria di Leuca there is another sought-after place foe scuba-diving: Pescoluse. As the name suggests, this location has a great variety of flora and fauna on its sea-bottom besides a diamond clear water and inimitable golden beaches.
