Entertainment and fun for your Salento holiday
To brighten the holidays of the thousands of people who visit Santa Maria di Leuca during the summer, the Pro loco tourism organisation has put together a rich calendar of events. There are lots of ways to enrich the pleasant summer evenings, between a walk along the promenade and a pasticciotto.
Theatre can be a passionate business, making us smile and cry but mainly it’s about connecting with the landscape. It needs to dialogue with the space around it as well as with the audience. This is why Leuca in the summer, with its white houses, the sea and the stars, is the ideal location for drama events.
The renowned Premio Leuca theatre company is staging seven theatrical performances from 12 July to 9 September, all in the splendid setting of Piazza Ast. There are comedies in dialect, some great classics of Italian drama – such as works by Pirandello and Dario Fo – as well as international ones including a play by Molière, where you’ll be captivated by the acting and costumes.
Especially for drama fans, like most of us here in Salento, the City of Castrignano del Capo is organising another touring theatre festival. The performances will take place in magnificent natural settings: at Leuca’s monumental waterfall on 5th August; at Giuliano di Lecce on 12th August; in Ciardo on 21st August; and on 5th September in Castrignano del Capo. “Teatro sotto le stelle” – or “Theatre under the stars” – is a festival that features more contemporary theatre, providing audiences with opportunities to experience all sorts of new sights and sounds.
The programme of events and entertainment at Castrignano del Capo is very full, with all kinds of music, art exhibitions and entertainment. The highlight of the season is as usual the week from August 13th to 18th, the week in which the Virgin of Finibus Terrae is celebrated. There is a solemn procession and Mass, a pizzica concert, and the fried fish festival. In short, in just a few days Leuca offers you the most lively entertainment that encapsulates the real soul of Salento.
